Starr Carter is a 16-year old girl who is caught in between the two very different worlds of her poor neighborhood and the prep school she attends. After she witnesses the murder of her best friend, Khalil, by a police officer, Starr’s world crashed down. Khalil’s death becomes a national headline. While some call him a thug, and a possible drug dealer, Starr knows the truth about Khalil and how he wasn’t a thug and was unarmed the night of the fatal shooting. Starr is conflicted on speaking out about the event. Although she wants justice for Khalil, speaking out can endanger her life.
